Learning by Helping

I was recently asked to help a friend prepare for an audio visual presentation he was giving to a group of about twenty folks. We put a Power Point presentation together demonstrating his particular approach to making a craft item. It was simple enough, logical steps in the process along with reasons for each one, appropriate headlines, work flow and samples of finished craft items.

We had discussed the process ahead of time and his assignment was to gather photos of the work and find some reasonable sequence in which to describe his methods. What that made him do was to think about the sequence of events, the various shop made jigs and fixtures he used and why he had settled on these designs. I also asked him to think about defending his reasons for the way he did things. This exercise firmly cemented the process and the reasons behind it.

Some things had an obvious and valid reason, others just because that was the way he came to do it. Some steps could be modified or eliminated altogether as unnecessary and a waste of time. When he couldn’t give me a solid reason for something, it enabled him to reevaluate that part of the process.

Over the years I have discovered that whenever you give a group presentation or turning demonstration, you invariably gain more than your audience. Properly preparing to give a demonstration forces you to do some or all of the following:

Organize your thoughts Plan a logical sequence Stick to a predetermined time frame Present valid reasons for what you are doing Practice the presentation before hand and make adjustments Practice will also help you to become even more rock solid at this process and will expose any awkward or dangerous moves Seek alternative methods to accomplish a step if it seems dangerous or clumsy in practice Written Hand-outs force you to recognize jargon and to use terms which are more easily understood Inevitable audience questions can point out weaknesses in your methodology and may lead to alternate (sometimes better) approaches

As I’ve shared with you previously, if you want to really learn about something, volunteer to teach a class on it because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

Proverbs 11:25 MSG The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.

2 Timothy 2:24 MSG God's servant must not be argumentative, but a gentle listener and a teacher who keeps cool,

James 3:1 MSG Don't be in any rush to become a teacher, my friends. Teaching is highly responsible work. Teachers are held to the strictest standards.

Custom Cuts with the Laser

Example of a custom medallion

I often receive requests for custom logos or custom patterns for use with our Line of Laser Cut Kits or medallions. I enjoy creating unique items so I welcome the challenge. If you have something special, church, job, kids or grandkids, etc. drop me a note. These panels can be used for Christmas Ornaments, cups, mugs, coasters, plates, platters, bowl bottoms, etc.

On a custom basis, we can also do different sizes. What is your idea?

I promise these are more affordable than you might think.
