Cheese and Crackers
When we don’t understand something we often make incorrect assumptions which, in retrospect, seem a bit foolish. If you have never been there . . . never mind, we have all been there.
I’m sure you are familiar with the story of the poor European farmer who saved up his money for a passage to America via passenger ship. Each day he watched from afar as the other passengers feasted at the dining tables for breakfast lunch and dinner while he ate only the cheese and crackers he brought with him. As they pulled into port the captain pulled him aside and apologized for whatever they had done to offend the man which would have caused him to avoid eating in the dining halls with the other passengers. The fellow explained that he only had enough money for the ticket, but not enough to purchase those wonderful meals. The passenger gasped when the Captain told him that the meals had been included in the price of the ticket.
As a wood turner I was astounded when I learned that I could turn freshly cut wood into a finished bowl without waiting six months for it to dry. I didn’t know that it is possible to sand green wood with regular sandpaper. I thought it would clog immediately, it doesn’t; even up to 320 grit. Green wood cuts like butter and is a real joy to turn. Yes it will warp and go oval, but it turns out that Sweet Janice likes oval bowls! And they almost never crack if you get the walls and the bottom uniformly thin and avoid the pith. Big surprise, most other women kind of like oval salad bowls too. Who knew?
You don’t actually have to wait six months for bowls to dry. I apply two or three coats of walnut oil the same day and my bowls are ready to hold and serve salad the next day. I can wait one day much easier that I can wait six months. You know what they say about patience, “Lord give me patience, and I want it now!”
When you think something is going to be very difficult, you might not have all of the information. Some of your assumptions might be wrong. The task could actually be much easier that you imagine. Find someone who knows how to do it and get the information you need to go forward. Don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back. To quote a former president, Ronald Reagan, “It isn't so much that (they) are ignorant. It's just that they know so many things that aren't so.” Always remember that wherever you go, there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this message.
John 9:25 NIV He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
James 1:16 NIV Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.
Matthew 23:24 MSG Do you have any idea how silly you look, writing a life story that's wrong from start to finish, nitpicking over commas and semicolons?
Custom Cuts with the Laser
I often receive requests for custom logos or custom patterns for use with our Line of Laser Cut Kits. I enjoy creating unique items so I welcome the challenge. If you have something special, church, job, kids or grandkids, etc. drop me a note. These panels can be used for Christmas Ornaments, cups, mugs, coasters, plates, platters, bowl bottoms, etc.
On a custom basis, we can also do different sizes. What is your idea?
Obviously I can't do one but the minimums are lower and more affordable than you might think.
