Don’t Get Discouraged. Here’s Why

I was recently in a meeting where folks were invited to share what they were grateful for. A man in his late 40s said he was grateful that his Dad never gave up on him. This young man had very difficult past and could have easily been cast aside. His parents chose to have faith in his eventual victory and never gave up or gave into discouragement.

This is an example for all of us in every area of our lives. Give people an extra measure of forgiveness. Chapters close and we sometimes move on, but let it be the last resort instead of our first reaction. Stick with it as long as possible and as long as wisdom dictates stopping just short of foolishness. When you are working with a turning student who just doesn’t get it, try again and again. When light finally goes on and they get it you’ve created another success all because you didn’t give up.

I must be an inventor at heart because I love solving problems and figuring out how to make something work when it seems impossible. I love a challenge and, with some things, I have infinite patience. We recently introduced our new ToughSphere Jig. I worked on it for nearly 10 years and could never get it right. Something always just felt off with each new prototype. I didn’t get discouraged, a little frustrated maybe, but I never quit trying to solve each new challenge. The result is an excellent tool without bounce and chatter that is value–priced. It is exceptionally well suited for making very large spheres. You could turn a 12” sphere on a 16” lathe with ease.

If you’ve been working on a project for a while, don’t give up. Lay it down for a while then get back to it. If your challenge is a person, take a short break, and try again. I’m reminded that through all my mistakes and rebellion, HE never gave up on me.
