Anticipation

This was a particularly difficult week for me in the shop as I faced several new manufacturing challenges. However, I’m disciplined enough to push through and do what needed to be done regardless. I heard myself saying, several times, “that wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.” My heart wasn’t in some of the tasks and I would have put them off for later if I had the option, but I didn’t.

“That wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.”

I’m a very visual person. When I’m faced with a new task I haven’t done before, I try to see the process in my mind’s eye from start to finish. I anticipate different approaches and imagine the obstacles I will encounter and how I might avoid failure or stumbling blocks along the way. I look for ways to overcome problems and complete tasks given my equipment and capabilities. But I don’t take a long time to do it.

After a reasonable amount of time, usually 30 minutes to an hour, I get busy about that task and start. Then I adjust, then I go again. This week, there were surprisingly few adjustments needed. I completed the tasks and often remarked to myself, “that wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.”

My point is that once you get started it is much easier to see the next step and make any necessary adjustments. Visualization is a powerful tool, but it only goes so far. If you have a project in mind that you’ve never done before, take a little time to see it in your mind’s eye then start. Very often it won’t be as hard as you had imagined and you will get more done than you thought possible. Avoid the Fear Of Failure and get started anyway. You might just succeed and surprise yourself! Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

(Prov 13:12 [AMP])

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

(Rom 12:11–12 [MSG])

Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master,

cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard times; pray all the harder.

(Jas 1:12 [MSG])

Anyone who meets a testing challenge head–on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.
