How’s Your Vision?
When you drive your car are you able to see when the other driver is going to do something stupid (maybe just annoying) before they do it? When you watch TV or a movie can you see the end coming well in advance? How about a football game, can you see the quarterback sack coming, the interception in the making or do you see roughing the passer before the umpires even call it?
As a wood turner, when you look at a log, can you see the bowl or vase inside? Can you see the finished item while the log still has the bark on it? What if you could train yourself to see inside the log? Vision is a skill which can be learned, developed and honed. Here is a definition from “Your Dictionary:”
Vision
the act or power of seeing with the eye; sense of sight something seen by other than normal sight; something perceived in a dream, trance, etc. or supernaturally revealed, as to a prophet the experience of having such a perception or revelation a mental image; esp., an imaginative contemplation: to have visions of power the ability to perceive something not actually visible, as through mental acuteness or keen foresight: a project made possible by one man's vision force or power of imagination: a statesman of great vision something or someone, esp. a woman, of extraordinary beauty
I would like to recommend that you spend a few minutes looking closely at your turning blank. Imagine what the finished item will look like. See it in your mind’s eye before you even make the first cut.
Your job then becomes very simple, “Remove everything that doesn’t belong to the item you’ve seen within your blank.” If you practice setting a little time aside to really look at your blank you will very often be able to see that which is inside. Doing so will make your turning time a lot more fun and more exciting as all you need to do is liberate the item within. This is just one of many skills you will learn on your journey from tinkerer to craftsman to artist. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this message:
2Kgs 6:17 HCSB Then Elisha prayed, “LORD, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the LORD opened the servant’s eyes. He looked and saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Prov 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Song 4:7 ESV You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.
