Think First – Then Do Something

There are two sides to this coin. Acting before you think can lead to bad outcomes and make you look foolish or it can get you hurt. In business, we often speak of “The Paralysis Of Analysis.” So much thought goes into every decision that nothing gets done.

The secret is to find the sweet spot where you have given sufficient consideration to your project then you move to action. As long as my project doesn’t involve anything life-threatening or present the possibility of losing a body part, that process is fairly short. When I was 64 I repelled off a 1,000-foot cliff down to the first ledge about 100 feet below. That required some thought before I took the plunge! I should have known better but I’m just not that smart.

These days much of my effort is devoted to developing new widgets for my fellow turners or in developing better ways to do something that has always been problematic. It is very easy to get caught up in chasing my tail as it were. I have discovered that the best path is to strip out all of the bells and whistles and make a basic model. Solutions to the intricate details will usually become obvious as you actually begin making your project. There are often many fewer issues than I had imagined during the “Thinking” phase.

My recommendation for this message is to move to action after you have given your idea a reasonable amount of thought. Don’t think your idea to death. Eighty percent of success comes from getting started. All of the ideas in the world are worthless if you never do anything about them. Make a list. Set start dates. Gather materials and tools. Begin.

The worst that can happen is that your first try fails. OK, failure is part of success. Make the needed changes, correct the deficiencies, modify your design and go again!  Most of the time you can’t anticipate every issue and only through hands-on testing will you see the trouble spots. Most of the time you will have to make several versions to get one you are happy with. Then it can usually still be improved. I have learned that the problems I anticipate beforehand are often not problems at all. And things I didn’t anticipate do show up when I make the real thing.

The key to progress here is to give reasonable consideration to your idea, then move to action without wasting an excessive amount of time. “Think – Act”, the winning combination. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

Exodus 31:3-5 MSG  I've filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him skill and know-how and expertise in every kind of craft to create designs and work in gold, silver, and bronze; to cut and set gemstones; to carve wood - he's an all-around craftsman.

Proverbs 14:23 HCSB There is profit in all hard work, but endless talk leads only to poverty.

Luke 13:17 CSB When He had said these things, all His adversaries were humiliated, but the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things He was doing.
