Trying New Things
Folks who try new things make mistakes. That is how we learn. Folks who are trying things are the folks who are doing things.
Definition of Insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.”
We must resist the tendency to become “set in our ways” and push to keep learning new techniques, methods and skills. Getting old can be painful but considering the alternative, it is by far the best option. While we are here we might as well get the most out of each day. I’ve discovered that learning new things and perfecting the things I think I already know keeps every day fresh and rewarding. I am speaking of personal improvement and serving others.
I am considered by some as a pretty mature wood turner. Yet, I still watch YouTube videos, I still attend turning classes as a student, and read and study wood turning in magazines and books. Why? Because I almost always learn something new or see something I had not seen before and that brings new excitement and expectations.
I am reminded about the story of the pelican and the cannery. The pelican enjoyed an abundance of free food from the cannery every day so he stopped fishing for himself. One day the cannery closed. The pelican had forgotten how to fish and suffered a terrible ending. Don’t be that pelican.
Our busiest time of year is September through December. Fall will be here shortly and that means much colder weather, fall festivals, holiday gatherings with family and friends and Christmas. Make a decision to add at least one new category to your wood turning arsenal this season. Try it, learn it, master it, enjoy it, and teach others about it. Because, wherever you go, there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this message:
Amos 6:1 MSG Woe to you who think you live on easy street in Zion, who think Mount Samaria is the good life. You assume you're at the top of the heap, voted the number-one best place to live.
Romans 15:14 MSG Personally, I've been completely satisfied with who you are and what you are doing. You seem to me to be well-motivated and well-instructed, quite capable of guiding and advising one another.
Revelation 3:16 NIV So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
