Fish where the fish are not where you want them to be. Use the bait the fish want, not the ones you want to offer them.
I used to make furniture for a specialty retailer. He told me what he wanted to order including the kind of wood in the sizes and shapes he needed because that is what sold. From time to time I would convince him to carry one of my favorite-to-make designs. They rarely sold very well.
People are a lot like that. They like what they like. They like pens and salad bowls. They like spinning tops and Christmas ornaments at Christmas time. They like to receive bottle stoppers and pepper mills around the holidays. Handmade kitchen utensils are always welcomed and appreciated at any time of year. If everyone is doing something there is a reason why. Ask yourself if you would want that item if you were the one receiving it. Would you spend your money to buy it?
Regardless of whether you are giving your stuff away or trying to sell it, accepting the notion that people like what people like will result in much happier times at the lathe. You can swim upstream if you like, but going with the flow is very much easier and dramatically less tiring. Most famous artists aren’t famous until after they are dead; just saying.
As we take a little down time this Labor Day 2019 with family and friends, we might do well to contemplate the kinds of items we will present for the upcoming holiday season. If you are not a bowl turner, now might be the time to practice and get proficient. If you don’t turn pens realizing that they are the second most popular turned item in the world (second only to bowls) might convince you to add pens to your offerings. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.
