It’s The Little Things
It is all of the small things which together make a big difference. After more than 50 years of marriage to my Sweet Janice Brown, I still show up with roses for absolutely no reason. I make it a point to let her know that she is still the most beautiful woman I have ever known. I can’t wait for that first kiss of the day each and every day.
When you walk into your monthly turning club meeting be sure to greet other members by name with a firm handshake and look them in the eye. Do your part to make them feel welcome and more than just a number no matter how long they have been coming. And those random acts of kindness, they shouldn’t be random at all. Be kind to folks today on purpose. When someone bothers to bring a piece to show and tell they are taking a chance on being embarrassed so find something encouraging to say about it. The work doesn’t have to be perfect to earn a sincere compliment.
I read an interesting question the other day, “If America is so terrible, why are so many people trying to break into it?” I know our country is far from perfect, but we do many of the little things right. For most of us we have clean water, safe roads, safe neighborhoods, freedom of speech, the right to vote for our elected officials, there is food on the grocery store shelves and gas at the pumps. For all of our troubles, this truly is the land that flows with milk and honey for the vast majority of our citizens.
Think about our common bond, turning wood. That alone should tell you that we are a very prosperous people. When we are able to spend this much time, energy and money on our hobby, probably one of many hobbies, it is because we are a blessed people. Blessings come with responsibilities. Recognize that you have a part to play and do the little things that make it possible. Be a greeter at your club and your church. Get up and come to the meetings, bring doughnuts once in a while. Call a friend you haven’t seen just to check up on them. Let them know they are important to you and that they are missed. Get out and vote whenever you have the chance. These are the little things that make a big difference. So, remember that wherever you go, there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this message:
Matthew 11:25 HCSB Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people.
Luke 16:10 HCSB Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.
1 Timothy 3:12 MSG Servants in the church are to be committed to their spouses, attentive to their own children, and diligent in looking after their own affairs.
