Sight Isn’t The Same As Vision
It seems contradictory that so many folks can look at the same thing and each one see something completely different. For example: after a storm trees sometimes blow down and must be cut up and hauled away. Although everyone sees the actual trees themselves, some folks see a huge cleanup expense, others see a yard full of firewood and as wood turners, we see bowls, lamps, vases, and hollow forms, etc. Collaborations put multiple creative minds together on the same task resulting in a finished project that could never be achieved by a single individual working alone.
Those with vision may look at a huge empty meeting room and see it filled with lathes, demonstrators, students with the smell of freshly turned wood filling the room. While the sound of a bowl gouge roughing down a bowl blank from a half log resounds loudly. Others see a huge bill to rent the hall or the massive amount of work organizing such an event will require. The visionaries see the lives which will be impacted for the better, the families which will treasure the hand-made heirlooms their family members will make. They see the ocean of new friends to come and look forward to the endless training classes all new turners need to get them headed down the right track. They see the rekindling of excitement and new purposes in the lives of folks they haven't even met. . . yet.
Visionaries are not stopped by the hard work their vision will require for hard work and effort are ever present with any worthwhile task. They see beyond the cost and effort to the end results. In their mind, it is already a fact; they just need a little time. Your turning club was started by men and women like that and you are the evidence of their visions. The companies you worked for were started by men and women with vision.
Visionaries come in all shapes and sizes. You work with them, you live next door to them, and you go to church with them. And for many of you reading this, you are the visionary I’m speaking about. Visions can be small, medium or very large. Grab hold of your own vision and begin to make it happen. As Michael West asks in one of his songs, “If not you, then who? If not now, then when?” Remember that wherever you go, there you are.
