We Are All Pretty Much The Same

Yes, you are a unique individual in millions of small ways. But in the bigger ways, we are all pretty much the same. We have two eyes, two arms, two legs, etc. We all need food, shelter, clothing and so on. We might be white, black, brown, yellow, green or purple on the outside, but on the inside we are all the same color. We all bleed the same red blood.

That means the folks you run into at the grocery store, the bank and the gas station are the same people in your turning club and in your church. That also means we are all subject to the same kinds of things. If we are going to keep our organizations healthy, vibrant, alive and moving forward the same kinds of strategies will be effective across multiple venues. We will always have turnover where people come and people go; where enthusiasm fades and new people catch fire.

One of my favorite stories describes four kinds of people and how they respond to a specific situation. The principle here is incontrovertible and is true in many different situations.

The first kind of person hears the message, but has no interest for a multitude of reasons.

The second kind of person seems interested, but not enough to get involved.

The third embraces the new idea and begins to get involved, but quickly becomes discouraged when success comes too slowly and the effort seems too hard.

The fourth kind of person is interested, gets involved, sticks with the program until they are successful, matures in the craft and goes on to become a teacher to others.

If you recognize this as the parable of the sower in Matthew Chapter 13, do you see the parallels within your turning club as well as your church? I do. Twenty-one years ago I founded a woodworking club. As I organized and structured it, I turned to the principles I had learned from my bible. They served us extremely well. In a few short years our membership grew to over 200 and we were holding almost 90 meeting a year. The principle that only 1 in 4 will stick with the program in the long run and that ¾ will turn away proved to be absolutely true. That is why you need to recruit new members constantly and look after the new people who respond to your invitations. You must provide opportunities for them to grow through a solid mentoring program. After all, we are all pretty much the same. Remember that wherever you go there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

Matt 13:3-9 HCSB Then He told them many things in parables, saying: “Consider the sower who went out to sow.

As he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them up.

Others fell on rocky ground, where there wasn’t much soil, and they sprang up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep.

But when the sun came up they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered.

Others fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them.

Still others fell on good ground and produced a crop: some 100, some 60, and some 30 times what was sown.

Anyone who has ears should listen! ”

Club Demo: Tuesday Eve March 12, 2019

Barnesville, Ga Woodturers Club

Ron and Christopher Brown will present a demonstration on "Resin Casting - The Christopher Brown Method."

The March 12 demo (resin casting) will be conducted by Ron Brown and his son, Christopher.  Christopher will be the main presenter since he is the one who is the avid caster and by now, expert.  Ron will be the facilitator and narrator. Chris will actually cast a blank during the meeting so folks will be able to see the steps live and in person.  They are bringing a casting pot, compressor, resin, a few molds and some dyes. They will use a format which allows members to ask questions during the presentation. Chris focuses on the larger blanks, but all of the techniques are applicable to any sized blank from pens to vases.  This is a great opportunity to see how you can enhance a simple project with dyes, glitter, and metallic powders.

As usual, we will open the doors to the First Methodist Church of Barnesville (375 Thomaston Street) at 6:00 pm, the business meeting will start at 6:30 and the demo will begin shortly thereafter.
