It’s Not Hard When You Know How!
Having been invented in the 1920’s, by the 1930’s the motorized chain saw was just becoming available to the public. One retailer offered a large model with the guarantee that “You can cut 10 times the lumber in one day.” A very angry lumberjack stormed into the store and demanded his money back! This was obviously a hoax. The retailer thought there must be something wrong and took the brand new chain saw outside to see. One pull of the rope and the chainsaw sprang to life with a loud roar! The lumberjack jumped back and shouted “What is that noise?”
It’s not that hard when you know how!
Using a coring system saves material and yields multiple bowls from the same piece of wood if you know how. Try it on dry wood and you would swear they were trying to kill you. Coring systems are wonderful when used with green wood!
Lathe Tool Sharpening systems are a blessing if you know how to set them up. Otherwise they can be one of the most frustrating and time wasting systems in your shop. A skew chisel is fast, versatile, and leaves the best off-the-tool finish of any of the HSS lathe chisels you own; if you know how. Mike Mahoney and Glen Lucas each produce dozens and dozens of bowls in a single day, because they know how.
Eight steps to knowing how to do something new
Do your homework. Think about it, ponder it, imagine how you might do it Spend some time online including YouTube videos and see how others do it. Learn from them! Take a class when possible Buy a video from someone who has already figured it out and is willing to show you how they do it. Without spending a lot of money, get at least the basic tools necessary to give it the first try. I always try to figure out what equipment I might already have that could possibly work before I spend more money. Try it. Fail and try again. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, etc. Learn from your mistakes. If you can see success ahead, get better tools, spend a little more money. Throw your failures away and get better Eventually you will figure it out if you don’t quit. Wisdom will give you the ability to recognize when to quit and move on if it is not ever going to work or if it will be too costly and not worth the effort. Failure is part of succeeding.
Never cease to improve. Even when we are considered “Masters” we can still get better. Share what you’ve learned with others. At our average age (middle aged to really old) we don’t have enough time to make all of the mistakes ourselves. And always remember that wherever you go, there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:
Eccl 1:13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!
Eccl 7:27 “Look,” says the Teacher, “this is what I have discovered: “Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
2Tim 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
