Why We Need Struggles

The butterfly story. You’ve probably heard the story about a man who tried to help a butterfly out of its cocoon by slitting the cocoon open. The butterfly that emerged had small, unformed wings, and died soon after. It needed the struggle out of the cocoon to force the fluid into its wings to stretch and open them so that the butterfly could fly. By trying to shortcut the process, the man had instead doomed the creature.

“By trying to shortcut the process, the man had instead doomed the creature.”

Turning wood is not inherently difficult, but it does require understanding and a specific skill set. Turning with High Speed Steel lathe tools requires more skill than turning with carbide scraping tools. Acquiring those skills take time, patience and practice. It can be difficult to watch new turners go through the process of learning to turn without catches and trying to find that sweet spot to get smooth cuts without grain tear-out.

When we are helping guide new turners it is important to avoid the temptation to shortcut their learning process. Have the strength to allow your student to struggle until that light bulb turns on and they gain the understanding you were waiting for.  This process can be painfully obvious when teaching someone to use the skew chisel. They are likely to get multiple catches until all of a sudden they see how to present the skew properly. Almost instantly the catches vanish; a minor miracle!

Life is a lot like that. I have posted a sign in my shop to remind me of this important fact. “Shortcuts are for people who have time to do it twice”. I barely have time to do it once. That is why most of the Seasoned Citizens generation did their own homework to get a passing grade, got up every day and went to work and didn’t expect that anyone owed them anything. They do expect fair treatment under the law and for people to keep their promises. Strength comes through life’s struggles, always has, always will because wherever you go there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message: From Facebook: “Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Right is right even if no one is doing it.” Proverbs 1:5 NIV let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— Proverbs 9:9 NIV Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. Philippians 4:9 MSG Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

Thank you for purchasing the Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 by Ron Brown’s Best, LLC. Your item has been shipped as fully assembled as efficient packaging will al- low.  Still you have some final assembly to do. The 12” model may be fully assem- bled when you receive it. The 16 will require a bit more and the 20” has an extra piece.

I have included as many photos as possible to eliminate as much misunderstanding as is practical. We reserve the right to make changes and modifications over time so the unit you receive may be slightly different than the one's show herein.

Your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2  should look like this when fully assembled and available for in- stallation on your wood lathe.

The left hand side of the photo is considered the front side (operator side) and the right hand side of the photo is considered the back side (behind the lathe).

The Arch is divided into two main units and gives you the ability to remove most of the steady rest for greater access to your vessel. We have used ratchet knobs on the front side for quick removal whenever you need to rotate or remove the front 2/3’s of the steady rest.

For balance, we mount the steady rest Arch Assembly with the wheels over the aluminum support base.

Step 1:

Your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 ships partially assembled.

Begin by laying out the 4 major assemblies; 3 Black HDPE plastic assemblies and 1 aluminum sup- port base. Lay out any loose hardware included with your unit. There will also be a clamp assembly to attach your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 to the lathe.

The Arch Assembly for the 12” and the 16” units is in two pieces; a front piece and a back piece. The Arch Assembly for the 20” comes in three pieces so there is an extra Black HDPE Section. The

Middle piece is attached to the front piece permanently during the initial assembly by the user.

Most hardware has been left in place where it will be used. Simply remove it when it is time to attach the next assembly and it will always be the correct hardware for that hole.

Begin by attaching the back Arch section to the right hand side of the aluminum base with the two long bolts already in the aluminum base. The back section will not need to be removed after this so we provided self locking nuts. Do not fully tighten these nut at this time. Wait until everything is in place and properly aligned.

Next install the front Arch section on the left hand side of the aluminum base using the long bolts and the two ratchet knobs. In use you will sometimes remove these bolts in order to move the front Arch section away from your vessel. Leave it loose for now.

Step 2:

For 20” Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 Customers. Otherwise, skip to Step 3

The 20” model has an extra section for the Arch. One mending plate is shipped already attached to the center Arch section. The arch is shaped so that it will only fit one way and it will hold very securely.

The left side is permanently attached with two 1/4x20 screws, lock washers and nuts. There is a chamfered recess in order to provide clearance for the top wheel assembly.

The right side is secured with a 5/16” bolt and 5 star knob. You will remove this bolt when moving the front arch away from your vessel from time to time.

Once everything is accurately aligned you may tighten the self locking nuts on the right side of the base, and snug up the ratchet knobs.

Below is a view from the back side of your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2

Step 3:

The last step is to install the third wheel assembly arm into the arch. A bolt is supplied into the prop er pivot hole and comes with a self-locking nut. See the origin diagram. Tighten this bolt and nut until the arm won't move then back it off approximately 1/8" of a turn. It will be snug but the arm moves freely.

Install the adjustment nut with the 5 star knob in the hole which aligns with the slot and the assembly is finished. Your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 is now ready to mount onto your lathe.

What are the upper set of holes for  in the Arch sections?

If you have a 12”, 16” or 20” wood lathe, bolt the Arch sections to the aluminum support base using the LOWER row of holes.

If you have a 10”, 14” or 18” wood lathe, bolt the Arch sections to the aluminum support base using the UPPER row of holes.

The center of rotation will line up perfectly so you may fully utilize your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 at its maximum capacity and at its minimum capacity.

Where can I get replacement wheels and bearings?

I used standard readily available in-line skate wheels and ADEC7 bearings. They are 84mm medium durometer (hardness). You may purchase replacement wheels and bearings directly from me at Www.ronbrownsbest.com or they are widely available online in a variety of different colors and diam- eters.

Unless you turn all day every day, you shouldn’t need to replace the wheels for many many years.

How do I set the wheels against my vessel?

Most folks have the vessel between centers with the tailstock still in place. Install your Amazing Steady Rest Type 2 and lock the aluminum support base to the lathe bed using the supplied flathead and locking bar supplied.

With the lathe off, place each wheel in contact with your vessel at the desired point. Lock each wheel assembly in place by tightening the 5 star knobs. Rotate the vessel slowly at first then bring up to speed to check for support, tightness and excessive vibration.

How do I open the Arch?

Loosen the 5 star knob and remove the bolt.. Loosen one of the ratchet knobs and remove one bolt. Loosen the second ratchet knob and simply pivot the front of the Arch assembly out of the way. To remove it completely, just remove the second ratchet knob and bolt. This should take about 30 se- conds.
