Would You Jump Out Of An Airplane With No Parachute for $100,000?
Consider this question carefully before you answer it.
What if I told you it was a single engine Cessna 172 with a ceiling of 10,000 feet?
What if I told you it would be parked in its hanger when you jumped?
Don’t make your mind up before you have adequate information to make an intelligent decision. I am constantly reminded of this when I view turned pieces offered for sale on Etsy, eBay, Facebook or on someone’s website. For example, someone offers a composite resin bowl with eucalyptus burl for $8,000. What is the likelihood they have ever sold one or will ever sell one at that price? What do they know that you don’t?
I just want to encourage you to look beyond the surface when you see how someone values their items. I love to create, invent and design everything involved with turning wood. That includes lidded boxes, kitchen ladles, bottle stoppers, bowls, plates, platters and of course all of the cool accessories that go along with making these items easier, faster safer and better. I make some pretty cool Christmas Ornaments too. I turned about 100 as samples for the various symposiums and Woodworking Shows complete with ebony finials and a beautiful shiny CA finish. I never intended to sell my samples but I needed finished examples of what someone could make with the laser cut kits I do offer. I received so many questions asking the price for my finished samples that I finally put a sign on them asking for $150 each. I figured no one would pay that much and I didn’t want to sell them because I didn’t have time to make more. We actually sold 12 that year. Now the price is $200 each!
It is an easy trap to see an item for a certain price, realize that you can make a very similar item and if you could just sell 20 per month at that price, you could get a new car with that money, or take that vacation with that money, etc. The problem is that you don’t know how many are actually being sold at that price in any given month. Realize that folks rarely pay you what you think something is really worth and people who ask a certain amount rarely actually get that amount. You will always make better decisions when you get the whole story, because wherever you go, there you are.
