Strength In Numbers

Why You Should Join A Woodworking Club

One of the first things I recommend to folks, especially new wood turners, is that they find a woodworking club in their area and go to the meetings. The second thing I recommend is that they sign up for some wood turning classes with folks who know what they are doing. Here is my thinking on wood turning clubs.

Woodworking Clubs are gathering places for folks who are enthusiastic about our craft. Members are eager to share what they have learned, often the hard way. The members represent a vast resource for new turners. You will find limitless encouragement to help you through the struggles you will inevitably face. All you have to do is ask and 20 different people will offer help you solve your problem, usually for free. Your money will go much further because you can get reliable advice on which tools to purchase and which tools to avoid as well as advice on worthwhile jigs and fixtures. You will be exposed to new ideas for projects and new methods you never even imagined were possible. You will make new friendships and some will become life-long friends. After a short while, you will be the creative one in your family having learned to make all manner of interesting and useful things from wood (and plastic). The holiday seasons will be much more exciting from now on as your friends and family actually look forward to opening your hand-made one-of-a-kind gifts just for them.

Many of you are already members of your local woodworking – woodturning club so you know this is correct because you have witnessed it yourselves. I would remind you to remember when you were a new turner and it seemed like everyone else knew so much and you felt so lost. Help the new folks, be patient and gentle with the new folks, be eager to guide them and offer encouragement always even when they do it wrong. You may be lucky  enough to see some of your students become the teacher. I have and there is nothing like it! Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this message:

Ecc 4:9-12 NIV Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

James 3:1 NKJV My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

Psalm 32:8 NIV I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
