Can' See The Forest For The Trees

Friends,

Sometimes we can be too close to something to see what is obvious to everyone else. Or we understand something so well that it just seems obvious when it clearly isn't. The Longworth Type 2 occupies much of my day lately so I understand it in depth. I received an interesting email this week and that I thought many of you may have exactly the same questions, so here is the email and my response.

Thanks,

Ron

Subject: questions about Longworth 2 chuck

Ron,

Jim xxxxxx from our San Antonio wood turners club told me about your Longworth 2 chuck. I am interested, and have a few questions to help me decide what to get.

The 16” and 20” combos have donuts with 6 and 9 inch openings and 6 rings. Do some of the rings fit in the plate with the 9” opening and some in the 6” opening?

The smaller rings 5”, 4”, 3.5”, 3”, 2.5” and 2” have lips which fit into the 6” ring. None of them are designed for use with the 9” Big Hole Top Plate.

There is an option for 4 notched rings. How or when is a notched ring used?

The notched ring set us used with scoops and ladles where you need the handle to go somewhere or you need a place for the handle socket. You are able to position the sphere (bowl) at angles using the notched opening in the ring. You could also use it where the base of a goblet is larger than the bowl of a goblet. If you get the solid ring set, you would only need three notched rings; 4”, 3”, 2”. If you want some other size less than 6”, they are available for $14.99 each. (Example: 2.5” Notched ring)

I have two sets of Nova Cole jaws that I’ve used for a while. I see lots of wobble especially with the larger set. I read that I should expect to see some wobble with your LW2’s as well. Would you characterize the wobble with your LW2 as better or worse than with the Nova’s?

We see very little wobble in these plates. I think they tend to cancel any warp out when you tighten the buttons and pull the front plate tight against the back plate. The material in the type 2 is also much thicker at ½” each plate and is made from a different material which might also help. I used to get complaints about the earlier type 1 Longworth, but I have sold tons of the type 2 and not had any complaints so far.

I see conflicting statements on your website about using the LW2 centering and the donuts at the same time. I would like to be able to use the LW centering ability to get a bowl centered and then add the donut rings for additional holding power. Is this possible or not?

I modified the Type 2 so that both modes can be used at the same time. The first version of the type 2 was one or the other. Now you can use the self-centering function and the doughnut function together. The best of both worlds. It took some engineering wizardry but I figured it out.

What is the approximate weight of the 16 and 20 inch LW2’s with and without the donut assembly?

The 16” is approximately 8 pounds and the 20” is will be between 13 and 14 pounds without any doughnut ring configuration.

I have a Powermatic 20” lathe. I presume that the 16 would be the largest LW2 I could use. Correct?

The actual outside diameter must be less than the states size in order to clear the bed ways including the wingnuts when used at the maximum capacity. The 16” OD is approximately 15.5” and the 20” OD is approximately 19.5”. You can successfully use the 20” if you choose that one.

Are the riser rings included or do they need to be purchased separately?

I am currently including a storage stand and riser rings with the combinations at no extra charge.

Thanks,

Jim xxxxxxxxxx

(If you are curious, Jim decided to order a 16" Longworth Type 2 Combination.)

Quick Update

I received a fantastic response to my request for suggestions regarding new designs for this years laser cut Christmas ornaments. Thanks! I'm sure I will be using some of them which will earn their contributors a $100 gift certificate.

It is very obvious I haven't done a very good job publishing some of the designs I already have in that many suggestions for new designs have been available for the past 3 years. In particular are the military; Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and more. We are working on a special section on the website just for those designs. We offer them for $10 each plus shipping. Look for it soon at www.ronbrownsbest.com
