Impossible - Is Just A Reason For Some Folks Not To Try

Most of my life I have been blessed with a predominate characteristic, I’ve been too dumb to know I couldn't do it so I did it anyway. Usually much to the chagrin of much more educated or experienced folks telling me I couldn’t do what I was actually already doing.

When I was 20 years old, married and very broke, I made a functioning table saw by bolting a skill saw to the bottom of a piece of plywood. I clamped a 2x4 to the top for a fence and voila! I had a functioning table saw for $19.99. I built and sold a ton of 1970’s era plant stands, end tables, curio shelves and book cases from reclaimed (read free) pallet wood using my “table saw” and a $9.99 jig saw. I was the epitome of “young and dumb”.

I didn’t know it was supposed to be impossible so I did it anyway. In America we have so very many resources available everywhere if you just look around and think for a minute. All you have to do for inspiration is watch some YouTube videos of craftsmen in 3rd world countries turning out bowls, furniture and other wooden articles using almost nothing. One of my all-time favorites is the turner using a sharpened leaf spring with his hands and feet sitting on his butt making bowls. Number two is Russians making Matryoshka nesting dolls with 100 year old hook tools and an automobile axle for a lathe in -20 degree weather. They apply a beautiful varnish finish with their bare hands. Nothing is really impossible if you just try you will eventually figure out a way. Noah built a huge boat with his sons. Yes it took 120 years, but he got it done! (And he didn’t even have electricity!)

All I’m saying is start with what you have, add as you go and get it done. Over time it will get easier, you will get smarter and more skilled and better equipped, eventually. But, today, use what you have and you will be surprised that nothing is impossible. It might not be easy, but it is not impossible because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

Matthew 17:20 NIV  He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Mark 10:27 NIV  Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Philippians 4:13 KJV I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Free Downloads Have A Whole New Look!

(And they are actually easy to use)

We scraped our previous software for managing the Free Download section on our website. It was never ideal and lately it just stopped working altogether. I think you will be very happy with the new version and I was relieved at how easy it actually was to download a file.

You still have to be registered and logged in, but now you click on a file and it downloads like you would expect. You can't add free stuff to a paid order, but it is so easy I think you will like it much more than before. Thanks for your patience while we made the change.

Downloads you will have to be logged in.

THANK YOU!

New Combinations are here.

It Just Make Sense. Finishing the bottom of a vessel, the underside, removing the tenon separates you from the amatures. And everyone looks at the bottom to see what you did. It has always been a pain to work on the underside of an almost finished vessel without destroying it. Large, medium, or small now you can easily and quickly hold them all very securely.

Longworth Chuck Type 2 Combinations now include the Solid Ring Set (See Below) as well as the Big Hole Top Plate, the Standard Doughnut Ring with 6" opening and a complete set of hardware. During this sale, you also receive a free stand and one set of 8 riser rings.

The Amazing Doughnut Chuck line now includes your choice of either a Notched Ring Set or the Solid Ring Set plus the Big Hole Top Plate, Doughnut Ring with 6" opening and a complete set of hardware. During this sale, you also receive a free stand.

If you already have a basic unit from Ron Brown's Best and want to add to your collection, we have options for that too. Everything is backwards compatible within the Amazing Doughnut Chuck line and the Longworth Type 2 family. (Longworth Type 1 is not compatible - Phenolic version)

The Wyoming Woodturner, Sam Angelo has posted an unboxing video I thought you might enjoy.
