The WOW! Factor
The next time you see a turned piece and think WOW! Stop and take a minute to really see it. Look at it from different angles, different elevations and different distances. What makes this piece special? Is it excellent or just different? Is it meant to shock or is it so well done that you have to get a second look?
The bigger question is “What exactly makes this piece so special?” If you can answer that question, you can learn to use those elements with your own turnings to make yours special also. Here are some sample questions you might ask:
Is the material special? Is the finish flawless? Is the shape especially pleasing? Are all of the sanding marks gone? Does it look balanced or is it clunky? Does it look like someone rushed to make it or did they take their time? Is it the size you would expect or is it much larger or much smaller? Does it have features which leave you asking “How did they do that?” Does it leave you wanting to figure out how you can do it too?
These questions and many others require actual deliberate thought. But the fruit will be that folks will begin considering your pieces and asking these questions about your creations.
As we celebrate our Nation’s Independence Day on July 4th, 2018, it is Americas 242nd birthday. Our nation indeed has that WOW! Factor and I’m proud to be an American. My family will be giving thanks to our God and to all those who have fought so we can live in a free country. We respect the Constitution and the rule of law and pray for those who rule over us, for those who protect us and for those who serve us in the greatest nation on earth. America is indeed salt and light for the rest of the world. We don’t do everything right, but our leadership is trying to correct that. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
Happy Independence Day, America! Because wherever you go, there you are.
