Success - comes to those who hustle while they wait
One of several of my guiding principles of success is that “Success comes to those who hustle while the wait.” Back when I actually had a real job if I didn’t have an immediate task in front of me, I would do something I’d been putting off because I didn’t have time before now or other tasks had taken priority. Today I welcome a little bit of down time so I can simply build inventory, write something, plan my next video or perform maintenance on a machine.
If you will anticipate things and be proactive rather than wait for something to happen and try to react, you will be amazed at how much more you get done and how many fewer fires you have to put out. If you sharpen your lathe tools at the end of each session, you won’t have to interrupt or delay your turning activities because you don’t have any tools which will cut worth a flip. If you keep a running list of supplies you need for your shop, you won’t get to the store trying to remember what you meant to buy on your next visit. This is the free app I use on my phone and it is worth its weight in gold. https://www.colornote.com/
If you organize your tools in a logical fashion so you can find them when you need them, you will have more time to actually turn at the lathe instead of hunting for something you need and know you have but can’t find. A little forethought and action goes a long way to making your days go more smoothly.
If you like to make projects which require glue-ups for example, and you find yourself waiting for the glue to dry, think about cutting out more parts, or turning something quick; bottle stoppers, pens, spinning tops, or roughing out a bowl blank, etc. while you wait. I love to make lists for the following three reasons:
I love to set priorities and see them checked off the list. I don’t forget things. I see many of today’s youth taking about being bored (of course I never hear this from my own 7 grandchildren). To me that just means that they are waiting for someone else to give them an assignment because they haven’t learned to look around them to see what might need some attention. My kids learned quickly that I always had plenty of tasks just waiting for moments of boredom to surface. Yes you need to focus all of your attention when required, but many tasks don’t demand your full attention 100% of the time. I’ve learned that if I use the down time while I wait, I can get a ton more things done. No I don’t text and drive and I can barely stand to listen to talk radio in the car anymore for fear that I’ll lose my voice from yelling. Remember that wherever you go there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this message.
Prov 31:27 NET2 Watching over the ways of her household, she would not eat the bread of idleness.
Proverbs 10:4 NIV Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.
Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
