You Know It’s True
The engine on a very large container ship would not start. The owners had tried everything and had gone through the best large engine service companies in the world without success. Someone recommended an old man who had been working on ship engines since he was a boy. Desperate, they summoned him as their last hope.
The old man arrived with a large bag of tools and went to work. He examined the ships engine and carefully inspected everything in the engine compartment. Then he reached into his tool bag and took out a small brass hammer. He carefully gave engine a couple of taps. The engine started at once and ran like it was new. The owners were delighted.
A week later they received a bill from the old man for $10,000.00. Astounded the owners demanded an itemized invoice. It read “Tap with hammer $2.00. Knowing where to tap $9,998.00.
Wood turners are like that too. We take a piece of firewood and sell it for $100 because we know how to make it look like a bowl. Or we take a dowel and three square inches of wood and sell it for $10 because now it looks like a spinning top. We can take an ounce and a half of plastic and turn it into an heirloom writing instrument worth $75 or more in about 30 minutes. Knowing how and where is what folks pay for.
A brain surgeon had a stopped up toilet and had to call a plumber. In 10 minutes the toilet was running freely again. The charge was $125. The brain surgeon remarked to the plumber “I’m a brain surgeon and I don’t make that kind of money!” To which the plumber replied, “I didn’t make that kind of money either when I was a brain surgeon.”
The next time someone asks you to turn something special for them, a special bowl, a special Christmas Ornament, a special set of coasters or a cutting board personalized just for them, don’t hesitate to get paid for what you know, not just for the firewood you use to make it from. You have skills you have studied and practiced and invested lots of hard earned cash in expensive equipment so don’t be ashamed because wherever you go, there you are.
