Five Pounds of Potatoes In a Two Pound Sack
Ungrateful. I catch myself complaining all too often about my small workshop, but actually I have two shops. They are very overcrowded and bursting at the seams with tools, mostly expensive tools. There isn’t enough room to work comfortably because there are machines everywhere. I always have to move something to work on a different machine.
When I began woodworking a lifetime ago, my first table saw was a 7-1/4” circular saw bolted to a ¾” piece of scrap plywood with a 2x4 for the rip fence. I paid $19 for the saw and got the wood for free. I began building plant stands and occasional tables for my wife from pallet wood. Today, my shop is literally bursting with professional grade equipment accumulated over a lifetime (and both shops are heated and air conditioned!!!). In those early days I could never have imagined I would be so blessed!
I think we would do well to look around us and understand just what an incredible time we live in and understand that in many parts of the world, they have no real understanding of the luxury we take for granted every day. Many of my purchasing decisions nowadays are not based on the cost, but on the space I have to put it in. Exactly how big of a TV do I really want to deal with? If I get any more surrounded by sound, I could actually damage my hearing. OK I can turn up to 38” on one of my lathes, why? I can get hurt all day only turning 20 inches.
One of my other passions is bass fishing although I haven’t had much time for that lately. I was watching a blessed young man fishing first in Mexico representing the USA in an international fishing tournament (they won) and then on to the Amazon for peacock bass. You would never know just by looking at him that he faces brain surgery in November to remove a large tumor. Although we are all praying for a good outcome, this surgery is life threatening.
No more complaining from me about the amount of work I have to get through today. I could check my email and not have any orders to fill. I could not have any new ideas I need to flesh out or prototypes to build and test. I was actually able to get out of my warm bed today and write this little note while I enjoyed a fresh cup of great coffee in my well-appointed home office. No traffic for me! My phone rang early with a call from a friend in England calling to help me get the word out about some of my newest products. Later today I'll ship orders to the UK, Canada & Tasmania. The favor God has granted to me and to my family is very humbling. I am reminded of our human tendency to never be satisfied and to never appreciate what we have. Look around at all you have and be thankful, be grateful, I am. Here is wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving season to come and hoping you enjoy the best Christmas Holidays yet. Because, wherever you go there you are.
Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:
Deut 6:10-12 NIV When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Prov 27:20 NIV2 Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.
Prov 30:15-16 MSG A leech has twin daughters named "Gimme" and "Gimme more." Four Insatiables Three things are never satisfied, no, there are four that never say, "That's enough, thank you!" - hell, a barren womb, a parched land, a forest fire.
Heb 12:28 MSG Do you see what we've got? An unshakable kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God. For God is not an indifferent bystander.
