Apt To Teach With a Heart to Serve
It is the middle of August here in Georgia and almost all of the schools returned from summer vacation last week. I want to thank the thousands and thousands of folks who spend their lives dedicated to educating our young people and equipping them for success as adults. No politics here, just how it is supposed to be, how it was when you and I were kids.
I made a stop at my local Walmart the week prior and was inundated with mothers and fathers shopping for school supplies with their kids. The excitement was palpable as the little munchkins filled their baskets with items from the school shopping lists in anticipation of another school year. And this brings me to my point; all of us should be apt to teach with a heart to serve. When we have an opportunity to pass along the secrets of our woodturning craft, or even just woodworking in general, we should never miss a chance to educate someone else. How many times have you heard your mom or dad say “an old man I used to know showed me how to do this.” Or, “my grandmother taught this to me when I was a little child.”
The hot weather is rapidly coming to a close and fall will be here soon. It will be time to prepare for the cold ahead, for the fall holiday season of Thanksgiving and the Birth of Jesus Christ we celebrate at Christmas. With so many factions trying their best to divide us, perhaps this year we can decide to approach this year’s holiday season with a heart to serve. I can’t tell you exactly what the rewards will be for your service to others, only that your rewards are certain and will exceed anything you could expect. My challenge to you is to find one person who is interested in making something on a lathe. Invite them into your shop and help them hand make a holiday gift for someone special in their life. Don’t expect anything in return from them, but do write to me with your story after you receive something unexpected because you had a heart to serve. Remember, wherever you go, there you are.
