How To Become A Pessimist

Guaranteed to work!

Never watch other turners do something you often do, like turn a bowl. After all, you already know how to do it so what is there you could possibly learn? Don’t watch YouTube video clips, because they are amateurs and too stupid to deserve any of your time. You’ve been turning so long that everyone else should give you the proper respect so don’t ask anyone else how they might approach a difficult technique. You will come up with the “Right Solution” by yourself. They are doing it wrong any way. Be quiet. The last time you offered a suggestion, they ignored it. Don’t go to turning club meetings, because there are just a bunch of show-offs there bringing their latest work to brag about. Above all, don’t speak with a professional woodturner about your situation. He will just belittle you and make fun of your problem. His advice is probably wrong or would involve having to buy something you don’t already own, or maybe even use a tool you do have in a different way. That involves learning, yuck. Always buy new jigs and fixtures without asking someone to explain how it works, and for God’s sake, if it comes with a video, don’t watch it first. Just go ahead and use the item. How hard could it be? What could go wrong? If you have extra parts left over, just toss them. It is probably just sloppy packaging by some stupid person at the manufacturer. When something goes wrong, don’t try to figure out why, just chalk it up to bad luck and over-priced inferior turning material. PSE (personal safety equipment) is uncomfortable so don’t use it. Besides scars and stiches are a babe magnets and you always heal up sooner or later. Those stories about lung disease from breathing saw dust are just old wives tails anyway. And only a few people actually die each year from being struck in the head while not wearing a helmet or full face shield. Most of them just lose an eye or get lots of stitches (babe magnets). If you are asked to teach a class or give a turning demonstration, decline. The things you will learn during the preparation alone might overload your brain with new ideas plus you might have to change the way you do things because they don’t make any sense when you try to explain why to someone else. If you are team teaching, you might develop a friendship and who needs more friends? I can’t say enough about avoiding magazines, books and videos. They will pollute your thinking and often seduce you into trying new methods and projects. With all of those expanded skills, you will want to spend more time in the shop and perhaps even show someone else what you have learned. That is not what a pessimist does! And lastly, don’t ever ever ever give something you’ve made away for a Christmas or birthday or wedding present. They will expect more homemade gifts in the future and that is just too much responsibility.

Warning!

Doing some or most of the above will have the opposite effect and will turn you into an optimist, so be careful because wherever you go there you are.

Here is my inspiration for the above.

Heb 10:25 MSG “not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.”

Prov 26:20 MSG “When you run out of wood, the fire goes out; when the gossip ends, the quarrel dies down.”

Deut 31:6 "Be strong. Take courage. Don't be intimidated. Don't give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He's right there with you. He won't let you down; he won't leave you."

Ps 71:18 NIV Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.
