An Object Lesson
At first glance, many tasks seem daunting when taken in their entirety. It can be difficult to see how we can get something accomplished when we are overwhelmed with the enormity of the task before us. Vessels constructed using the “Segmented Turning” method can seem very daunting. Many of them require several hundred individual pieces that have to be cut and glued in place for their construction. In fact, most are made up of only four smaller fairly simple subassembly groups. Glued together the sum total is much greater than the individual parts.
What we learn is to break the task down in to achievable groups of tasks so that we begin to see how we can actually get it done. You know this from your work environment, from everything else you have done. It is no different in turning wood.

An Easier Practical Application
Another task which can seem difficult is shaping and sharpening a new lathe tool. I put together a short YouTube video entitled “How to Sharpen a Brand New Bowl Gouge.” Most bowl gouges are not ready to use out of the box. The shape isn’t what you want and they are certainly not sharp enough to cut wood properly. There are a few exceptions, of course, like Doug Thompson’s, and some signature gouges from Jimmy Clews and Mike Mahoney. Ninety percent of the gouges available for most turners need preparation before they are ready to use.
I find it very easy to get the shape and edge I want when following a simple outline and it is available on my web site for free in the “Free Downloads” section. Look for “How to Sharpen a Brand New Bowl Gouge.” This whole process takes five to 10 minutes depending on the size of the gouge and the grind I want. But, it works every time and I have used it for years. Most of all, this process makes re-sharpening simple, fast and repeatable, because wherever you go, there you are.
