The Pow - Connecting the dots.
Sometimes you hear it, sometimes you see it, and sometimes someone will actually say it out loud. You’ve been explaining something or showing someone how to do something and the moment they get it – POW! Finally all of the dots line up and it makes sense. The light in their brain comes on. POW comes in many forms, “I’ve got it!”, “Well, now that finally makes sense!” or, maybe it is just a big old ear-to-ear smile.
POW is when you know you’ve gotten through. My children are all grown now with kids of their own, but I have seen that light come on time and again as they finally connect the dots and it makes sense at last. Math, English, chemistry, parallel parking a car, these are all wonderful opportunities to enjoy lots of POWs with our children and grandchildren. So is turning wood especially when it comes to skews, roughing gouges on square spindles and presenting a bowl gouge without fear of death!
ABC (anchor, bevel, cut) is a proven method for mastering various spindle cuts and is a legitimate method for eliminating catches. Something as simple as hollowing out a lidded box using a spindle gouge with a pull cut can be almost magical if you don’t understand the physics behind it. Then POW, it all makes sense and is one of the fastest and easiest cuts you could ever make.
The next time you have the privilege of teaching someone something new, be sure to listen to and watch for the POW. It is exciting and rewarding when you know they’ve got it. I’ve shared my teaching formula with you before so I won’t go into detail here. I’ve used it to train literally thousands of sales people in my business career over the years. It is the track I run on for all of my videos and in all of my demonstrations regardless of where I am or the size of my audience.
Tell them what I’m going to tell/show them. Tell them/Show them. Have them show me, or ask questions so I know they understand. Tell them what I just told them.
It has worked extremely well for almost 50 years for me and hundreds of other managers, sales trainers and instructors who use it also. You might think about giving it a try. I know you will like it too because wherever you go, there you are.
