Zero Sum Game

Webster’s definition of “ZERO–SUM GAME”

:  of, relating to, or being a situation (such as a game or relationship) in which a gain for one side entails a corresponding loss for the other side dividing up the budget is a zero–sum game

adjective  ze·ro–sum \ˈzē-(ˌ)rō-ˈsəm, ˈzir-(ˌ)ō-\

There is a mindset that believes that on order to give something away, you must suffer loss. While this may be true with certain tangible items in the short term, it is just the opposite in the long term. When a woodturner gives wood away, I guarantee that within a relatively short time, someone else will show up with more wood. I once gave away a whole home woodworking shop for free. Within a year, I had a much better shop than I ever had before and someone else paid for everything! Ask me for the story sometime, it is true even if it is hard to believe.

When a turner gives away his secrets for making a particular item, that method will flourish, others will improve on it and the giver will ultimately receive more insight than he ever thought possible. When you make something beautiful and give it away, blessings will return many times what you gave. Sometimes it takes a while and almost never comes back from the same people. But, it always comes back. That is one part of the beauty of belonging to a woodworking club.

From time to time, I give folks tools, DVDs, other accessories and sometimes wood. Sometimes I just spend time to help someone become a better turner. I always make a concerted effort to keep my giving “pipeline” full so the return “pipeline” will never run dry. Some of the most generous folks I know are also the most blessed.  I believe the Universe expands when necessary to return favors generously given by the givers.

As you may know, I am recovering from a badly broken leg. Three months on the couch could easily have put a crimp in our finances. My family rallied to keep things rolling and then right on time, seemingly out of nowhere, orders came in. Some were near record setting, most were unexpected, the timing can’t be explained and yet here they are. To paraphrase one of my favorite passages, “Give and it shall be given back to you…” Thank you also for your support.

I would encourage you to realize that the more you help others, the more you give to others, the more will be headed back your way to the point there won’t be room enough to contain it all. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this message:

Luke 6:38 KJV

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Prov 11:24 ESV

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

Mal 3:10 NIV2

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
