People Just Like You

We would do well to remember that the folks who are members of our turning/woodworking club are the same people that we go to church with, see at the grocery store, at the gas station, might be neighbors or could be family members. In other words, they are people just like you.

Folks rally to a common cause; common problem, common enemy or common goal. Club contests are a great example. The Gwinnett Woodworkers Association in Northeast Atlanta, Georgia has established several seasonally appropriate contests over the years. One of the favorites is “Jig and Fixture Show-and-Tell”. There is always great participation in “Birdhouses”, 2X4 Contest” and anything to do with Military Veterans such as “Pens for Soldiers”, “Walking Canes for Vets”, etc.

I heard that they had over 20 different members participate in building a workbench for use at the club meetings. One Christmas this club made over 100 Christmas Ornaments and auctioned the entire lot off to raise money for a Children’s Hospital. Another perennial favorite is “Toys-For-Tots”. If you have a member in need, folks often step up to meet that need.

If your club members don’t seem motivated, take the initiative and suggest to your board that your club gets behind a worthy cause in which many different members can participate. You will be doing someone good and you will reinvigorate your membership. Structure annual contests with adequate notice and clear rules and you will be surprised at the level of participation and plain old fun! I would like to suggest that you contact any of the officers listed at www.gwinnettwoodworkers.com if you have questions as to how they structure any of their very successful contests.

I discuss this topic and many others in my free manual “Starting A Club”. You may download it for free at www.ronbrownsbest.com > Free Downloads>Page 2. Remember, wherever you go, there you are.

Speaking of clubs, we have been invited to attend the AAW National Symposium in Kansas City, June 22-25, 2017. We can be found in the Easy Wood Tools booth and in the Trend Sharpening booth. We will have working samples of the Amazing Doughnut Chuck™ and the Amazing Off-Center Chuck™ for you to examine along with limited inventory for immediate sale on a first come first served basis.

Here is my inspiration for today’s message.

And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Neh 4:6 ESV

So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

Along withe the photo I received a note from Jon which read:

"Ron,    Yesterday afternoon I rec'd my toolholder and pods.  As you can see from the attached photo, the tool holder fits my new lathe bench perfectly!  I enjoy dealing with folks who are honest, charge a fair price for their goods, and produce a quality product.  You have met all my criteria and I am very pleased that I decided to do business with you.  In the future you will be one of the first company's I turn to for my wood turning supplies.

Thanks for taking good care of me,

Jon"
