The Perfect Model

Somewhere along the way, the perfect model for effective communication evolved. It is effective, easy to use and works better than anything else I’ve tried. I use this basic structure for presenting new ideas, for explaining something to individuals or in front of groups. Every one of my How-To DVDs follow this format. This is how I teach and communicate effectively.

It has only four parts:

Introduction – Tell them Tell them what we are going to tell/show/demonstrate, so they know what to expect. Prepare an opening statement of no more than 3-4 sentences describing in general what they will learn in this presentation or lesson. Close with some form of this, “When we are finished today, you will have learned to ____________.” Show Them – Give your presentation, teach the lesson, demonstrate your technique, make shavings, etc. Test Their Understanding – Have them do it or otherwise try the method or technique you just explained. Afterwards, using the appropriate format, get feedback which lets you know they understand what you just explained or demonstrated. You might ask questions, ask them to show you, or to do it, breakout into small groups and practice, etc. Review and Reinforce - Summarize Save time for an effective wrap up. Review the core lesson(s). Restate the goals you set in the first step. Leave time for Q&A.

Tell Them, Show Them, Test For Understanding, Tell Them What You Told Them

This four step model works across the board anytime you need to communicate effectively. It works particularly well with woodturning presentations and any type of training session you can think of whether for groups or individuals. You can use it anytime you are called on to present an idea to others. When you have a preset structure to follow, half of the work is done for you, because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this message: Job 6:24 NIV Teach me, and I will be quiet; show me where I have been wrong. Job 32:7 NIV I thought, ‘Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom.’ Romans 12:6-7 NIV We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;

I have prepared a very short video showing a typical texturing demonstration which I do for audiences at The Woodworking Shows each weekend this time of year. Although I’ve done many thousands of these, they never get old. I hope you enjoy this three and a half minute video.
