The Waldorf Principle

I ran across this story the other day and thought you might enjoy it.

“The story goes back to the late 1880s. On cold, rainy night, an elderly couple walked into a small hotel in Philadelphia to shelter from the storm. The clerk, a young man, tried to accommodate the couple, but unfortunately the hotel was booked out. Not wanting to send them out into the rain and seeing no other alternative, he offered them his room for the night. “It’s not exactly a suite, but it will make you folks comfortable.” Hesitatingly, the couple took up his offer. After a night’s rest, the gentleman—while clearing the bill the next morning—told the clerk that he was touched by his gesture. He would be ideal to run the best hotel in the US, he said. “Maybe someday I’ll build one for you,” is what he is rumored to have said.

Two years later, the clerk received a letter recounting that fateful night in Philadelphia, along with a ticket to New York. The elderly gentleman was William Waldorf Astor and he wanted the young clerk to manage his new hotel. George C. Boldt took the challenge up and the rest, as they say, is history. Some call it the origin of the Waldorf principle of selfless service, others an urban legend. But what is certain is that the hotel and Boldt changed the hospitality sector, introducing the concept of 24×7 room service and other revolutionary practices that went on to become norm.”

I’ve noticed a trend toward civility during our recent travels. On the crowded shuttle busses, gentlemen are giving up their seats for Sweet Janice much more often than in the past. Folks are holding the doors for us and others in restaurants. Tempers seem a bit milder with a touch of patience on ever more crowded airplanes. All of this putting the other person first seems to be spreading everywhere we look. There are nasty exceptions, of course, but overall there seems to be a touch of niceness this season for a change. I like it!

Superior customer service has always been a secret ingredient to success and it would seem that folks are rediscovering it. If you understand that what goes around comes around eventually, you will do the right thing knowing that on balance, goodness will get back to you, eventually. Radio personality Dr. Laura Schlesinger used to remind is to “go do the right thing,” and that is good advice because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

Heb 13:16 NIV

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Mark 9:35 MSG

He sat down and summoned the Twelve. "So you want first place? Then take the last place. Be the servant of all."

Matt 5:46-48 MSG

If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that. "In a word, what I'm saying is, Grow up. You're kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.
