Do The Right Thing
Knowing what the right thing is vs. the wrong thing is sometimes difficult. Knowing what you should do and then actually doing it can be more difficult still. As wood turners, knowing when to do the right thing can make a huge difference. But the rewards for doing the right thing at the right time can be huge, such is life.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger used to have a radio show where she gave advice on the air and one of her slogans was “Now go do the right thing.” I was a frequent listener and at that time I often cut names and slogans all the way through the wooden handles of claw hammers with a scroll saw. So I did one for Dr. Laura. A few weeks later, I just happened to be in my work truck with my son Christopher when Dr. Laura spent two minutes describing live on-air the hammer I had sent to her. She loved it and vowed to keep it on her broadcast console from now on!
Sometime later Dr. Laura came to my town for a book signing. Yes, I was there and got to meet her in person. I introduced myself as “The Cool Hammer Man”, who had sent the hammer. She squealed and jumped up to hug my neck as her security guard drew his weapon. It scared the poo out of me before the guard holstered his weapon. As I recall, Dr. Laura was about five-feet-nothing but that hug made me feel like I was 10 feet tall. Dr. Laura explained to her staff that I was the fellow who had made and sent that wonderful hammer and they all seemed to instantly know who I was.
This Christmas season, I would encourage you to do the right thing even if it is difficult. Every day we have fewer and fewer chances to mend broken fences and to heal relationships so dear to us. Now go and do the right thing because wherever you go there you are.
