What If You Are The Only One?
A visitor decides to attend your club meeting for the first time; what if you are the only one who asks their name? What if you are the only one who asks if you can answer their questions about wood turning or about coming to the next meeting or about helping them overcome a turning issue? What if you are the only one who introduces them to other members and makes them feel welcome?
If not you, then who? If you have ever gone to a church service or a Chamber of Commerce meeting for the first time and felt like you were invisible, you know what I mean. I hope that never happens to anyone again, but of course, it will. You can decide to never let it happen again when you are there quite easily.
Notice visitors (or folks who have not been to a meeting for a long time) Make a point of welcoming them to the meeting Ask their names, introduce yourself, write their name down so you don’t forget it Let them know you are willing to help with any questions they might have Introduce them to other members If appropriate, invite them to grab a coffee or a meal after the meeting Provide them with any pertinent literature Invite them to the next meeting Have them fill out a visitor card with phone# and email Follow up with a call and email a few days before the next meeting
When people get the feeling that they are an outsider, are invisible or are not important, they won’t feel comfortable coming back. You could be the difference. You might be the only one who lets them know that you care. They put forth the energy to get up and come to your meeting for a reason, they were looking for something. Find out what it is and do what you can to help.
All I’m saying is that it takes very little effort to make a huge difference in someone’s life. Decide to do it on purpose, look for opportunities to be that person who makes a difference. The rewards for both of you are enormous. Remember, that wherever you go, there you are.
