The Secret Clubs Have To Offer

We join clubs for a variety of reasons, but there is a secret reason we keep coming back and often can hardly wait for the next meeting. You might think it’s the fellowship, or the chance to show off what you’ve learned or made since the last meeting, or the opportunity to get an important question answered, but those are all part of the bigger secret. Clubs offer quiet hope.

Hope can be found in many places. Depending on where you look, it can be deceiving or it can be fulfilling. If you look, you can find little pieces of it along the way. A smile offered by a stranger, a funny meme on Facebook, an uplifting TV show or Hallmark movie where the girl always gets the boy and lives happily ever after.

Without hope, there is really nothing to look forward to. As we age the world around us slowly begins to wind down and just getting out of bed requires more and more effort. Without hope, it becomes difficult to make the effort or spend the energy. Believe it or not, our woodturning clubs offer hope to many although it is rarely presented in those terms. Proposing a challenge project for the next meeting can offer focus and direction and provide hope until that day arrives. A common cause gives purpose - and hope.

For folks who believe in God, we have the greatest hope of all, eternal life when our time on this earth is through and the belief that we are here right now for a reason; we have a job to do. That hope can be displayed at our woodturning clubs through our sincere efforts to help other members learn to be better turners. We develop new friendships, many to become life-long friends. We engage in group projects to serve others; pens for warriors, canes for hero’s, toys for tots, etc. Most successful clubs have a stated mission to serve others and members find themselves on the giving end vs. being receivers. The great paradox here is that when you give to others you also receive a large blessing.

I have found that friendships made at the woodturning club can offer me opportunities outside of club activities we share. The hope our clubs offer might never be presented exactly that way, but if you think about it, that is what we are doing. If you are in leadership in a club somewhere, examine your decisions through the filter of hope and ask yourself if your programs and lessons are offering hope to your members and guests. I think you will find that this insight will bring a whole new enthusiasm to your efforts.

It has been said that a weak battery won’t jump start a dead one. In order to be contagiously enthusiastic, you need to be around other enthusiastic people. Look for them on purpose and get your batteries fully charged; have you ever wondered why I'm always so happy, hopeful and helpful, now you know. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:

Prov 12:25 MSG  Worry weighs us down; a cheerful word picks us up.

Job 6:11  NIV What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?

1 Thessalonians 1:3 NIV  We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
