Giving Is A Curious Thing

Giving is not a Zero-Sum Game

Zero-sum Game - Merriam-Webster : a situation in which one person or group can win something only by causing another person or group to lose it Dividing up the budget is a zero-sum game.

In athletic contests, sports contests or negotiations usually there is a clear winner and a clear loser. Giving isn’t like that, giving doesn’t follow the natural laws that we live by every day. When we turn a piece of wood, the tree clearly lost and we clearly won. Except that the tree may live on for hundreds of more years and be admired much more than before it was transformed into something of beauty.

When we stop to help someone we lose a little time and perhaps some cash, but what we have gained in return is joy, personal satisfaction and sometimes we may have restored someone’s faith in their fellow man’s kindness.

Giving can have exactly the opposite effect that we would expect. When we give something away, our time, our talents, our money, it comes back in so many ways we didn’t expect. The funny thing is that it usually comes back from a different direction or a different person and in much more quantity than what we originally gave.

We can decide to be stingy or generous. This time of year is a great reminder that generosity is the better choice all year long. In this season of giving, I would remind you to be generous and to remember the reason for the season and what was given to all of us on Christmas Day. Remember that wherever you go, there you are. We wish you a Merry Christmas from the Brown family to you and yours.

Here is my inspiration for this message; Eccl 11:1 Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Prov 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”— when you already have it with you. Luke 6:38  Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Merry Christmas!
