You Have It Because You Asked For It

You are probably familiar with the quote “Ye have not because ye asked not.” That is the glass-half-empty way to say the same thing. You are a woodturner today because you decided to be one. You made the decision, to learn this hobby. You acquired the lathe, the turning tools and the accessories needed to successfully turn wood into something beautiful. Then you spent the time, effort and energy to learn how it all works and now you make beautiful, functional pieces of handcrafted art for others to admire and enjoy. Then there is the pleasure you get from making those items in the first place.

So what now? Modern technology makes learning easier and faster than it has ever been. The power contained in smart phones, tablet computers, laptops and even full sized desktop PCs, is mind boggling. The YouTube site and others on the internet bring us information (much of it valid – some not so much) on every conceivable subject from turning wood to information about the most famous carpenter of all (not Norm Abram). If you want to learn to turn natural edge bowls, just view the videos. Has segmented turning captured your imagination? It is there too. I recently needed to construct a vacuum table for my CNC. It was YouTube to the rescue.

Meaningful permanent progress doesn’t usually come in big steps, but rather a series of small steps which tend to build on previous advances. Take and idea or technique which works reasonably well and make it a little better, then when it succeeds share it with your acquaintances. Don’t be afraid to fail many times along the way. You will figure it out if you don’t quit.

Try using a method or process from an unrelated field to see if it would work to solve your current challenge. Modify it as needed and voila! Problem solved. That is how I invented the Turner’s Laser Guide. Most large expensive Captive-Hollowing-Systems use a laser pointer to help locate the edge of the cutter. I do a lot of smaller items with hand-held hollowing tools. One day while hollowing a Christmas Globe about 2” in diameter and not wanting to come through the side, I said to myself “Wouldn’t it be cool if I had a laser pointer that would fit onto my hand-held hollower rather than have to set up a big clumsy hollowing rig?” With that idea in mind, I invented a unit capable of mounting directly on the tool which today is sold all over the world.

We are only given so many trips around the sun on this ball of dirt so what we do with them is up to us. Today’s technology makes learning faster and easier than ever. I would challenge you to make some decisions about what you want to be really good at and then learn all you can. Be the “go-to person” in your circle of influence as a knowledgeable expert and make a difference. Do it on purpose because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this message:

Proverbs 8:12 KJV
I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

Ephesians 1:17
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

I have had many requests to sell the finished Christmas Ornaments I display as samples at the Woodworking Shows and various turning symposiums. If you would like to have one of the Christmas Ornaments already turned and finished with a very durable CA finish, I have decided to offer them as special order items. You may request any of the designs offered for sale here. There are over 20 designs to choose from. These kiln dried black walnut blanks are produced as a byproduct of milling the Christmas ornament core blocks. They are a full 1.75” square by approximately 2.5 tall. They are off-cuts not quite long enough to make a core block. They are beautiful as any black walnut you’ve seen. Some may have small amounts of sapwood which should turn away during normal shaping of most bottle stopper blanks. These blanks also make excellent tops for acorn lidded boxes and other small projects. This is a limited time offer as quantities are limited.”

These are the core blocks I use to make my own Laser Cut Christmas Ornaments you see below. They turn very dark when finish is applied so don't be fooled by the light color in this photo. I have sized them to work perfectly with the Gluing Guides sold at www.ronbrownsbest.com. So many folks have requested this item that I finally decided to make it available. Often there isn't a source for thick kiln dried lumber nearby, or there is no table saw available, etc. If this piece of the Christmas Ornament Pie has been holding you back, now is the time. I also have limited quanties of African Black Wood available for the finials. The holiday season is just around the corner. It isn't too early to begin getting ready. Don't forget art and craft fairs as fine hand crafted Christmas Ornaments are great sellers.

Ridge Carbide Saw Blades are now available at RonBrownsBest.com.

I have known John Ferrie, owner, of Ridge Carbide Tool Co. for 10 years. I personally use these very high quality table saw blades in my own shop and they are by far the best blades I have ever used. In my experience, they give the highest quality cuts even in very abrasive materials like Alumilite, hard maple, black walnut, oak, purpleheart and ash. I find them to be unbelievably long lasting and they seem to stay sharp long past what I expected.

I have chosen to offer several of the top most popular selling blades rather than carry the entire line. If you are interested in extremely high quality, you will want to consider blades from Ridge Carbide. He also offers carbide saw blade sharpening with the same attention to detail.
I don’t often offer products that I don’t directly produce so that should speak volumes to you about how much I believe in this line of saw blades.
