Oh What A Privilege

We had the distinct privilege of attending another AAW National Symposium this past weekend. This time it was in my backyard, downtown Atlanta, Georgia. I am happy to report that this was probably the best run and best all-around AAW National symposium yet.

It is always exciting to see old friends and acquaintances and to be able to get to make new friends. As a vendor/demonstrator, there is precious little time away from our own booth in order to visit other vendors during show hours. This time, however, I took a little time out to do just that. I’m glad I did. And just like you, I spent too much money, but Christmas came early this year!  It is just a personal observation, but the folks enjoying themselves the most seemed to be the ones doing for others so that they could enjoy the symposium too. The youth area was filled to overflowing regularly. There appeared to be 50 mini-lathes with tool set-ups in a designated area on the vendor floor. A variety of different instructors led excited young people through various turning projects and you could feel the enthusiasm in the air. Really good job on this everyone!

Admission was free to the vendor area and to the instant gallery although at one point there was going to be a fee, I think that was a good move by the AAW. On Saturday I noticed tons of folks with the “One Day Wrist Band” who made the trip just to visit those areas. I think it is safe to say that this was not just another symposium.

I never would have thought that my family would be so heavily involved in a hobby I love when I was introduced to turning wood on a lathe all those many years ago. Oh what a privilege it is to earn a decent living doing what we love. It is very humbling to hear words of encouragement from so many customers thanking us for what we do and letting us know they are praying for me and my family. We are far from perfect, but are blessed beyond measure.

I can’t close this newsletter without mentioning the horrific massacre in Orlando this weekend. There is great evil in this world and there always has been. Our very wise forefathers did a terrific job in keeping most of it from our shores. Legions of brave Americans have gone before us to defend our liberty and our free society. Today our enemies are not afraid of us. They attack us without fear of reprisal from our leaders. Our armies are the best in the world when allowed to be. Brainless rebels trample our flag and attack our police and soldiers without fear. Our nation is at a historic turning point so now it is time to act. I would encourage you to do your part and I’ll do mine. Oh what a privilege to live in what is still the greatest nation on earth. I love the USA because wherever you go there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message.
1 Peter 4:14
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

Isaiah 1:26 NIV
I will restore your leaders as in days of old, your rulers as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

New! Dragon Fly

Dragon Fly Dragon Fly

New: 95% Kits

These kits are mostly line drawings or letters. They are called 95% because they are not cut completely through and will hold together during turning. You can turn something with writing on it removing a lot of material around the edges and still enjoy the full pattern. I can laser cut names when you order and with this method, the name won't go away.

Categories to consider are Birthdays, Anniversaries, Baby's first Christmas and all military seals; Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard. See the web site HERE for more info.

These are special order for now. Drop me a note if you want something in this category please. Click here to email

Note: Thank you for the tremendous response to this new item. I severely underestimated the demand for our new "Core Blocks". I will probably make this a stock item if the demand continues. If you need special sizes or lengths up to 2-1/2" thick and up to 10" long, please drop me a note HERE. My source is for Kiln dried black walnut only.

Kiln dried black walnut 1-3/4" X 1-3/4" X 4-1/2"

These are the core blocks I use to make my own Laser Cut Christmas Ornaments you see below. They turn very dark when finish is applied so don't be fooled by the light color in this photo. I have sized them to work perfectly with the Gluing Guides sold at www.ronbrownsbest.com. So many folks have requested this item that I finally decided to make it available. Often there isn't a source for thick kiln dried lumber nearby, or there is no table saw available, etc. If this piece of the Christmas Ornament Pie has been holding you back, now is the time. I also have limited quantities of African Black Wood available for the finials. The holiday season is just around the corner. It isn't too early to begin getting ready. Don't forget art and craft fairs as fine hand crafted Christmas Ornaments are great sellers.

Edge Lit Signs

I am also taking this opportunity to introduce a new product line. I made a bunch of them for my own use and got so many comments on these signs out on the show circuit that I decided to offer them to my loyal customers as well.

These signs are clear acrylic with very bright LED's along one edge which make the message glow like NEON!

Perfect for display on mantles, desks, shelves, wherever you celebrate service.
