I Think I Can

“Wishful thinking only serves to take your mind off the actual problem. It is a kind of a temporary virtual reality. Real problem solving type of thinking is useful when you are developing a strategy and an action plan to solve that particular challenge and when you establish a feasible time frame for its implementation.”

This kind of verbiage is in the opening paragraph of every company’s motivational meetings ever held in the last 50 years. Why? It is true. Words without actions are as hollow as a giant soap bubble at a 4th of July picnic. And they last about as long. My advice, do something.

After very careful completely non-scientific analysis carried out by yours truly, I have discovered that 90% of folks who turn wood do it for the fun of it! A full 95% of turners earn less than $500 each year, most of that is accidental. The vast majority of turners never sells any of their work, but choose to give it away for the love of creating something beautiful on a lathe. Turning wood on a lathe is about as “pure clean fun” as it gets. It is a hobby which can be shared with friends, neighbors and family members. It can be very quick, simple and nearly cost-free, or it can be made to be complex, expensive and time consuming. A turner has the great luxury of participating to both extremes and everything in between. The variety is endless.

If you didn’t get as much time in front of the lathe this week as you wanted to, it could have been because you didn’t schedule the time. I know things come up that take priority, but it shouldn’t be the TV, Facebook, or Twitter. I would encourage you to make specific appointment times with yourself and set aside an hour or two with the lathe, or preparing turning stock, or just time in the shop. Think about getting up early before work or beginning your usual daily schedule. Turn your phone off ; you do it for your Doctor and your Pastor, do it for yourself. You know this is good advice and although this is a woodturning newsletter, it can be applied to anything if importance, exercise, prayer time, or alone time with your spouse for example. Because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this week’s message:
James 2:17 NIV
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Prov 14:23 MSG
Hard work always pays off; mere talk puts no bread on the table.

AAW Symposium Coming Soon!

Don’t forget the AAW's 30th Annual Int'l Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia, June 9-12, 2016 at the
Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart. If you have never been to a National Symposium it is hard to describe the experience. If you are local and just want to visit the Instant Gallery Exhibit, or the huge vendor area, just those areas are perfect for the family including the kids and grandkids! Many of the vendors will have live demonstrations throughout the day. There is a ton of stuff to do in downtown Atlanta within walking distance. Sweet Janice and I hope to see you there. We have teamed up with the folks at Peachtree Woodworking Supply and will be in their booth.

Correction: I stated earlier that entry to the vendor and exhibit areas was free. I have learned that the AAW will be charging $10 per person for the first time ever this year.

Note: Thank you for the tremendous response to this new item. I severely underestimated the demand for our new "Core Blocks". I will probably make this a stock item if the demand continues. If you need special sizes or lengths up to 2-1/2" thick and up to 10" long, please drop me a note HERE. My source is for Kiln dried black walnut only.

Kiln dried black walnut 1-3/4" X 1-3/4" X 4-1/2"

These are the core blocks I use to make my own Laser Cut Christmas Ornaments you see below. They turn very dark when finish is applied so don't be fooled by the light color in this photo. I have sized them to work perfectly with the Gluing Guides sold at www.ronbrownsbest.com. So many folks have requested this item that I finally decided to make it available. Often there isn't a source for thick kiln dried lumber nearby, or there is no table saw available, etc. If this piece of the Christmas Ornament Pie has been holding you back, now is the time. I also have limited quanties of African Black Wood available for the finials. The holiday season is just around the corner. It isn't too early to begin getting ready. Don't forget art and craft fairs as fine hand crafted Christmas Ornaments are great sellers.

These are eligible for the 20% off sale currently in effect.

Edge Lit Signs

I am also taking this opportunity to introduce a new product line. I made a bunch of them for my own use and got so many comments on these signs out on the show circuit that I decided to offer them to my loyal customers as well.

These signs are clear acrylic with very bright LED's along one edge which make the message glow like NEON!

Perfect for display on mantles, desks, shelves, wherever you celebrate service.

I think it is appropriate to offer seals for the major branches of military service for this Memorial Day introduction especially at 20% off regular retail prices.
