Why We Succeed

I received an unusually high number or emails commenting on my last newsletter “Craftsman’s Dilemma.” It seems that I struck a raw nerve with a large number of you, so I would like to add a brief follow up here.

As Woodturners, we succeed because:

  1. We draw from other’s success and evidence that it can be done
  2. We have the hope and belief that we can do it too
  3. We have the tenacity to keep trying until we are finished
  4. Many of us have discovered the power that comes from participating in a woodturning club
  5. Whether formal or informal, many of us have discovered the power of mentors
  6. We use selective hearing on purpose - we hear the positive and ignore the criticisms

We live in the information age where via YouTube, Pinterest on-line forums and the internet in general, we can instantly find information on just about anything we might be interested in at the moment. One of my favorite research tools is to do an internet search and only view “Images”. I can view hundreds of examples of how other folks have solved the current problem at hand. Then I can choose to follow their examples or go a totally different direction.

See opportunities through an Exhorter’s eyes.  “Exhorters bring a word of encouragement and motivation to the people around them because they always see the optimistic side of the coin.”(1)

When you view someone else’s work that may not be as far along their journey as you are, try to find something to encourage them about. Try not to say things like “you almost got the form right” or, “after you go back and finish the sanding.” Rather offer something like “I see a huge improvement in your work. Keep at it you are doing fine.” Don’t underestimate the power of an encouraging word. Negative comments can have the same powerful bad effect and once spoken, you can’t take them back. I have benefited from these principles in my own life many times because wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this message:
Prov 12:25 MSG
Worry weighs us down; a cheerful word picks us up.
Hebrews 10:25 KJV
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
